An Olivia Rodrigo fan answers the ultimate question: GUTS or SOUR?
The GUTS vs. SOUR debate is the most controversial thing you could ask a Livie (a nickname for Olivia Rodrigo fans), and the answer is controversial. GUTS is the better album, but it is very close.
One difference is that SOUR has a deluxe album and GUTS does not. Even without the deluxe, SOUR is better. GUTS Spilled (the deluxe version of GUTS) is one of the best deluxe albums, so it would be unfair not to count it in.
The other big difference is the style. SOUR is more sad and passive, while GUTS is more aggressive and angry. While they both portray different styles in their songs, the overall theme of these albums is relevant.
If we go track by track, GUTS is the slim winner. The way that the album is versatile but stays on theme is a hard skill that many albums do not possess. GUTS is one of those albums that does almost everything well. “Stranger” and “Scared of My Guitar” are my favorite Olivia Rodrigo songs, and they are both off the GUTS Spilled deluxe album.
At the end of the day, both albums have broken records, won awards, and are well-received. Just because GUTS is better doesn’t mean that SOUR isn’t good. In fact, the opposite; it shows how good SOUR is.
