André Onana is the current starting goalie in a frail Manchester United team. He has been the goalie for arguably one of the worst teams in the Premier League and one of the worst Manchester United teams ever. So why is he so hated?

One reason is blunders. Onana is known for making mistakes and falling short under pressure. He has made many mistakes in big-time games, and this is a reason for him falling short in popularity. Another reason is for his team being horrible defensively. Manchester United have been less than acceptable defensively this season. They have conceded 51 goals in 2025 alone. An additional reason is he is playing for a team that is historically known for having goalkeeping legends. Manchester United have had the likes of David De Gea, Peter Schmeichel, and Van der Sar. Those are some of the best goalkeepers in history that he is getting compared to week in and week out.

The truth is he isn’t as bad as he’s made out to be. He is behind a horrible back line, on a very inexperienced team. He has 88 saves in 33 games and is truly an excellent shot-stopper. The errors he makes are because he has to make up for all the errors in the Manchester United squad. The fault isn’t Onana’s ability, it is Manchester United’s inability to win and have a competitive squad.
