For this year’s musical, Lower Dauphin is doing “Into The Woods”. For those who do not know what “Into The Woods” is, this is the perfect article for you.
“Into The Woods” was originally a book published in 1986 by James Lapine. Shortly after, the broadway musical adaptation hit the stage of the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego.
The musical’s story takes place in a rural village with a baker and his wife. Many years before, the baker’s father had stolen vegetables from a witches’ garden, cursing his unborn child’s wife to be infertile. When the baker learns about his wife’s curse, they set out to break it.
The witch requests four items, “a cow as white as milk, a cape as red as blood, hair as yellow as corn, and a slipper as pure as gold.”
Along the journey they meet many new characters, all along their own journeys. For the cow, they meet Jack. Jack was set by his mother to sell their cow so they can afford food. For the cape, Little Red Riding Hood, for is on her way to Grandma’s house. Hair as yellow as corn is Rapunzel, who is locked in her tower. And lastly, the slipper is Cinderella.
The musical is a bit gorey, but overall the musical is rated four and a half stars. The songs are exceptional and I cannot wait to see what the high school does with “Into The Woods.”
