New developments in Artificial Intelligence have given revolutionary breakthroughs with previously-impossible tasks, like AI-generated art and writing. However, some believe these new AI discoveries can pose a threat to our world.

Eliezer Yudkowsky, a decision theory and ethics writer and philosopher based in Berkeley, California, has been working on Artificial General Intelligence since 2001. He is incredibly knowledgeable in the field and popularized the idea of AI being friendly.

A letter from big names in the AI world, including Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak (co-founder of Apple), requested a six-month pause in AI developments. However, Yudkowsky refused to sign the letter as he stated it undermined the situation’s severity.

Yudkowsky responded to the letter with an article which he titled, “Pausing AI Developments Isn’t Enough. We Need to Shut it All Down.”

For years, Yudkowsky has been attempting to warn about the dangers of AI, noting that AI does not care for human lives in general. Yudkowsky’s article said, “Many researchers steeped in these issues, including myself, expect that the most likely result of building a superhumanly smart AI, under anything like the current circumstances, is that literally everyone on Earth will die.”

Amidst these new AI findings, stakes are increasingly high, and no one quite knows where they will lead.
