One of the best leagues in European soccer, the Premier League, has been having a significant amount of attention drawn to it recently. Just in the last couple of months, some of the league’s biggest signings ever have been made, such as a youthful, 22 year-old, Argentinian midfielder, Enzo Fernandez.

After winning the most recent men’s World Cup, Fernandez’s market value has increased dramatically. Many clubs would take interest in him from his stellar performance during the tournament, but Chelsea F.C. would be the ones to acquire him. The price for the Argentinian would be a whopping €121 million, ($131 m/£106 m) release clause, and the duration of his contract will last for eight and a half years. Benfica, Fernandez’s old club, would go through with this deal with Chelsea as they came to an agreement for Chelsea to pay for Fernandez’s release clause. Benfica did not want to let go of Fernandez, as he was one of their key players, but they had to take this opportunity as Chelsea agreed to pay off the release clause. The signing would be historic, as it is the most expensive signing ever to be made in Premier League history. This broke the old record holder, which was the signing of Manchester City player Jack Grealish, for about £100 million in 2021.

Fernandez would be one of many players to be signed by Chelsea in the extremely crowded January transfer window. All seven players to be signed by this club, David Datro Fofana, Andrey Santos, Malo Gusto, Noni Madueke, Benoit Badiashile, Mykhailo Mudryl and Enzo Fernandez would add up to the teams £500 million spent in the last year. Most of the money has been spent in the last transfer window, as the seven signings show.

This marks a milestone in European soccer as major clubs are willing to pay mass amounts of money for players they believe will benefit their team. Although I believe that the £121 million price for Fernandez was slightly excessive, he is a good signing, and Chelsea should be thankful they were able to pick him up. Only time will tell if Enzo Fernandez can live up to his price.
