On the morning of September 10th, Russia launched one of its heaviest waves of missiles and drones against western Ukraine.
However, some of these drones slipped into a Polish “no-fly” zone that endangered citizens. Before any damage could be done, Poland destroyed all of these drones, but has reportedly invoked Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (known as NATO).
Article 4 of NATO says that any member country should request aid from other member countries if they feel their security or territorial integrity is being threatened. This could potentially turn into a high scale war among many countries.
Why is this important? Until now, NATO has not been involved with the Russia and Ukraine war. Moving forward, we risk that all of NATO (32 countries) could come together and attack Russia. This could eventually trigger a high-scale war. This is all worst case scenario, and amongst all this fear in the media it is important to remember that these are the worst case scenarios.
Mr. Kratzer, the LDHS world history teacher, was asked for his thoughts on the situation. He said “I think this is Russia testing the waters to see how far they can get without the UN responding.” Additionally Seylah H., a student at LDHS was also interviewed and asked the same question. They said “I think it’s interesting because you never really know what anyone is thinking, and we are kind of removed from it. It is all very new, so you never know where these things are going to go or how they will end up.”
