What about Spring weather is so dangerous?

While Spring is beautiful, it can be un-safe.

While Spring is beautiful, it can be un-safe.

Although spring is a beautiful season, with newly blossomed flowers and warm weather, it is not all sunshine and rainbows. The season itself is arguably the most active weather season of the year.

Spring season is the time of year when change occurs, and while that may mean pretty flowers and spring cleaning, the weather is a big target of which temperatures can go back and forth to the extremes. A bright sunny day can soon be changed by a cold plunge with high wind speeds and rain.

Due to the warm and cold air mixing together, it causes tornadoes to take place, the weather event most often associated with spring. Tornado activity peaks in the spring season, bringing violent wind speeds, rain and heavy destruction in its path. About 187 reported tornadoes occured in April and 275 in May.

‘April showers bring May flowers’ is quite literally the truth in the spring. With heavy thunderstorms and torrential downpours happening frequently, flash floods begin to take place. These storms can produce rainfall rates of over an inch per hour. If that heavy rain persists for several hours at a time in a particular area, major flooding can invade city streets and homes.

Because the weather is so unpredictable, taking safety precautions is a sensible thing to do, and is important.

A common thing to make or prepare is a safety kit, which includes the main essentials you may need if you are caught in severe weather. Items like a first aid kit, personal information papers, food and water, and personal hygiene items are all things a kit should be composed of. Thinking and memorizing an emergency evacuation or shelter plan is also a beneficial idea. A map of your home and the routes you should take in an emergency should be included.
