The inaugural Falcon Flash March Madness bracket competition came to a close following the University of Connecticut’s Apr. 3 National Championship victory.

Mrs. Renee McMinn, the Co-op teacher at Lower Dauphin High School, was the proud owner of the winning bracket, with a score of 85 points (calculated by the Falcon Flash’s unique scoring system). McMinn beat out juniors Kyle Barber (84) and Brady Coonelly (81) who finished as runners-up in the competition. With an incorrect pick for the National Champion, the LDHS teacher was shocked when she heard that she was victorious.

“I was not expecting to win at all! I didn’t even have the champion right,” said McMinn.

The Champion Huskies were not a popular pick in the competition, with just three brackets or 10.7% having them in the Final Four and none with UConn in the National Championship. McMinn was one of the three, which gave her bracket a big advantage over others. Great selections in the Round of 64 and Round of 32 were also vital in the triumph.

As a prize, McMinn took home a McDonald’s gift card.

Staff of the Falcon Flash and students across LDHS await next year’s competition to see who can dethrone McMinn as the champion.
