n 1999, the Xtreme Football League (XFL) was founded by Vince McMahon but only played one season in 2001. In 2018, the league was rebooted by McMahon, the reboot season only lasted 5 weeks before COVID-19 killing it off in 2020.

In August of 2020, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Dany Garica, RedBird Capital purchased the league for $15 million. Johnson is serving as the league commissioner and is helping the league revamp itself. 

The XFL is a similar league to the NFL but has a few different rules. Instead of kicking extra points the teams have the options to go for one point at the two yard line, go for two at the five yard line or go for three from the ten yard line. For kickoffs, the kicking team lines up at the 35 yard line and the returning team lines up at the 30 yard line. No one can move until the returner catches the ball, the ball is on the ground, or the ball has been on the ground for three seconds. Onside kicks are also different, as instead of actually kicking the ball, the team that attempts to get the ball back has a fourth and 15, if they manage to convert it they get the ball back. This can only occur in the fourth quarter, the teams can always choose to kick an actual onside kick. Instead of a traditional timed overtime, each team gets three attempts from the five yard line. If, following the three attempts, the score is still tied, the game goes to sudden death. 

The regular season schedule is ten weeks long, February through April. The playoffs consist of two semifinal games and the winner of those two compete in the championship.

The league consists of two divisions, the North division and the South division. In the North division they include the DC Defenders, Seattle Sea Dragons, St. Louis Battlehawks, and the Vegas Vipers. In the South, the teams are the Arlington Renegades, Houston Roughnecks, Orlando Guardians, and the San Antonio Brahmas.
