Marching band can be defined as artistic talents and physical movement in a group by marching. However, despite playing an instrument and moving while playing it, a lot of hard work including the fact of learning new skills. That said, this is a very committed activity with having time to practice and working hard to attend summer practices and football games. Although, there is a huge debate whether it is a sport or not, yet between band kids and non-band kids they each have their own opinion. While saying that everyone’s opinion is different on marching band being a sport or not, there are different perspectives of people in our school of this debate.

What do you define a sport?

Do you think marching band is a sport? Why or why not?

Chelsea Blazina (senior, in marching band)-

“ A sport is any sort of skill or activity that requires athleticism and involves competition.”

“ It depends on if you compete or not, for our school we don’t compete, so I consider it not a sport. In professional DCI that can be a sport because it is a competition and you are required to be physically fit to achieve it.”

Jack Francis (senior, in marching band, does track and field)-

“ A sport has teams and people working together toward a common goal. Usually, you are competing against somebody else.”

“ I do not think our marching band is a sport, I think if you’re competing against other people for a score. Then, it is a sport, like a drumline where we compete for a score. I consider that a sport.”

Adrian Olweiler (sophomore, in marching band)-

“A sport is an activity involving physical exertion and a team, competition and winning stuff.”

“ Yes, marching band is a sport because it is a giant team. There is a lot of physical exertion during band camp and shows, so much in fact that people pass out and there are competitions and a form of entertainment.”

Sam Woltman (senior, cross country and Track & Field)-

“ A sport is something that is competition based, as well as something you put a lot of effort into.”

“ Yeah, it’s a sport because it requires a lot of commitment and a lot of moving around.”
