The Heisman Trophy ceremony was on Saturday, December 13th. The race was between four players, three being quarterbacks and one being a running back.
The first candidate was Fernando Mendoza who is the quarterback at Indiana University. Mendoza has had a great season so far with 2,980 yards, 33 touchdowns and only 6 interceptions. He was also coming off of a huge win against previous number one ranked Ohio State.
The second candidate was Jeremiah Love who was a running back for The University of Notre Dame. Love had a record breaking season for the Irish. Love finished the season with 18 rushing touchdowns and 3 receiving touchdowns. Love also had 1,372 rushing yards. Another thing that makes Love a standout player is that he accomplished these stats while splitting time with another very skilled teammate, Jadarian Price.
The third candidate was Julian Sayin, the quarterback for Ohio State University. Sayin had 3,323 yards, 31 touchdowns and only 6 interceptions. These stats are even more impressive when taking into account that Sayin is only a sophomore.
The fourth candidate was Diego Pavia, the quarterback for Vanderbilt University. Pavia had a total of 3,192 yards, 27 touchdowns and 8 interceptions.
Junior, Cohen Pollock says, “I wanted Mendoza to win. He is the most likeable candidate and has the stats to back it up.”
Mendoza ended up winning the race. He won with 643 first place votes. Pavia came in second with 189 first place votes. Love came in third with 46 votes. Sayin came in fourth with 8 first place votes.
Junior, Addy Moran says, “I thought that Jeremiah Love should have won.”
