As Sean Goldsmith entered his sophomore season, he was virtually unheard of to the college lacrosse world. However, the Mercer product made his name known on March 4, 2020, firing in seven goals in a dominating victory over St. Bonaventure. Goldsmith followed up that performance with three goals against Monmouth and three more against Cleveland State. Goldsmith was limited to just seven games due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but recorded a whopping 42 points over the span of his campaign (MercerBears.com). Goldsmith followed up his sophomore season with 26 points as a junior despite being limited once again, this time to just six games (MercerBears.com).

The strong righty can do it all—shoot, pass, dodge, anything, and has proved it throughout his career, but what stands out most to me is not only Goldsmith’s scoring ability, but how he paces his team’s offense and allows them to be successful. One can observe Goldsmith’s ability to control the flow of the Mercer offense and continue to make plays happen, even when they seem broken.

In the opening game of the 2022 NCAA Lacrosse season, Goldsmith notched two goals, both of which were monstrous, right-handed rips.

If Goldsmith decides to pursue a career in the PLL, any team would be lucky enough to have him. I see the Redwoods or the Chrome being the best fit for Goldsmith long term, however, as both teams could use a young attackman that can pace their offense for the future.

The Chrome have struggled in all three years as a PLL team, and they are yet to find a do-it-all attackman like Goldsmith. With the first overall pick in the draft, Goldsmith could very well go to the Chrome, but with UNC’s Chris Gray also in this draft class, I can not see the Chrome taking Goldsmith here.

On the other hand, the Redwoods have the third overall pick and could very easily land Goldsmith. Although they do have Rob Pannell to control their offense from X, Goldsmith can take the keys from Pannell, who is getting older. Even so, if Pannell does stay with the Redwoods for longer than expected, Goldsmith can dodge very well up top and could be a valuable asset running out of the box at midfield.

With Goldsmith on their side, the Mercer Bears have a legit shot at winning the SOCON and making an NCAA tournament run before their star attackman says goodbye and lights it up as a professional.
