Learning in an ice box

Start wearing your jackets to class because this school is staying the temperature it is.

“I am freezing.” “Why is this school so cold?” “OMG it is so cold in here” These are just a few quotes that students are saying every day. I talked to Vincent Crone, hbcshbc, and he helped answer some of our burning questions. Crone siad, “All of our schools operate on computer controlled systems which are programmed to switch over automatically based on OA (outdoor air temps) The default programming is set to ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) standards but we will make subtle adjustments for specific situations.” There is a set temperature range in the program in school that is 64-78 degrees. However, every room feels different because teachers are allowed to adjust their thermostat between 68-75 degrees. There are certain teachers that keep their windows open to give better air circulation, which will obviously change the temperature in their classroom. Some teachers are naturally just very warm, so they prefer to keep their room cool. Other teachers think that keeping a cold room keeps students awake and focused. According to Crone, the reason why the school is so cold is simply because of human nature. “The student that just returned from gym class would probably feel that the temperature in a room is too warm while the teacher or student that has been sedentary for a while may feel that the room is too cold” states Crone. When one person is cold, another person is hot, so they attempt to keep the school at 70 degrees to keep it right in the middle. The school tries to keep things neutral, because no one setting is going to suit everyone. Next time your friend asks “Why is this school so cold?” you will have the correct information to answer their question.
