It’s interesting to see how celebrities are dressed when they strut down the red carpet at award ceremonies and other formal events. Most choose a modest approach, modeling stunning designer clothes and accessories to impress their peers. Other stars, however, take the opposite approach by dressing as if they’re headed to a costume party. Below are five of the strangest red carpet looks from recent years.
Doja Cat
American rapper Amala Dlamini (Doja Cat) broke the internet on January 23rd following her arrival at the Schiaparelli fashion show in Paris, France. Styled by makeup artist Pat McGrath, the 27-year-old was covered head-to-toe in red paint along with 30,000 crimson Swarovski crystals. The jewels were used to accessorize every inch of her body, including her eyelids, lips, chest and arms, making her almost unrecognizable. As for her apparel, Doja wore a strapless red dress and a textured skirt consisting of protruding red beads. This outfit quickly became the talk of the internet with many users comparing the rapper to a Flamin’ Hot Cheeto.

Sam Smith
Like Doja Cat, British singer Sam Smith immediately became the talk of the internet on February 11th after wearing an inflatable jumpsuit to the 2023 Brit Awards in London, England. The black latex jumpsuit flared at Smith’s thighs, creating a dramatic curvature mirroring the outfit’s squared shoulders. Internet users compared the singer’s jumpsuit to a rotisserie chicken or a balloon animal.

Heidi Klum
Perhaps the most terrifying red carpet look of all time, German-American model Heidi Klum dressed as an enormous worm for her 2022 Halloween bash. After not being able to throw her annual Halloween party for two years in a row due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Klum wanted to show up with the most insane costume possible. The monstrous costume made it so that only Klum’s eyes and mouth were visible. The costume was designed by Bill Bryan, a puppet and creature suit maker, using foam. While being interviewed, Klum took the opportunity to get in character by laying on the floor as an actual worm would.
American actor Jared Leto arrived at the 2019 Met Gala with a shocking accessory in his hand — a replica of his own head. Paired with this unusual accessory was a daring yet elegant outfit. Leto wore a high-neck red gown bedazzled with all sorts of gems. His outfit certainly balanced out the absurdity of the head he carried as an accessory.

Katy Perry
Similar to Jared Leto, American singer Katy Perry wasn’t afraid to show up to the 2019 Met Gala with a daring look. Perry arrived wearing a chandelier dress paired with a matching headpiece. According to the New York Times, the headpiece alone weighed a whopping 40 pounds. Perry’s after-party outfit was just as crazy, if not crazier. After lighting up the Met Gala with her chandelier dress, she changed into a gigantic hamburger costume for the after party.
