Lower Dauphin’s newest math teacher, Mr. Charles Hansell III, certainly looks happy to be here in the picture shown above. Hansell seems to be excited about his new opportunity in person as well. He has only been at Lower Dauphin for about a month, but is really liking the students, staff, and environment thus far. “Really the one thing I like is the community here. Everyone seems so tight-knit, everybody seems so open to each other, and really proud of the work they do here. I can’t help but want to join in with that.”

Teaching has been a large part of Hansell’s life from the beginning. Hansell was raised in nearby Lebanon County, and was born fourth in a family of five brothers. Interestingly enough, all of those brothers ended up becoming teachers. “It’s sort of the family tradition by now,” Hansell chuckled. Tradition or not, it was clear that Hansell was gifted at helping people as far back as his own days in high school, so much so that his teachers encouraged him to go into education. “I was always the student that was able to help out other students with their assignments and such, and I really enjoyed it.” One day, Hansell’s own high school math teacher noticed him helping other students out with work, and asked him to teach a class to see how he liked it.  “‘Give it a shot, see how it feels’,” Hansell remembers that teacher telling him. Hansell really enjoyed that experience, and went on to pursue his passion until it led him here.

Outside of school, one of Hansell’s biggest hobbies is playing older video games. His current console of choice is the Nintendo Switch. He also likes spending time with his black cat, Midnight. Due to his family, Hansell is an avid Philadelphia sports fan, with his favorite Philly team being the Flyers. “You know, there’s rooting for the underdog, and then there’s rooting for Philadelphia teams, obviously,” Hansell grimaced, “Oh man. Sad times, I don’t want to get into it.”
