65th annual Grammy Awards recap
February 8, 2023
The 65th annual Grammy Awards ceremony was held on Sunday, February 5th at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California. It was a night filled with surprises, phenomenal performances and record-breaking wins.
According to Billboard, an estimated 12.4 million viewers tuned in to watch the live awards show from home. Despite there being a whopping 91 award categories in total, many of the viewers only focused on four: album of the year, record of the year, song of the year and best new artist.
Album of the year
After the tremendous success of his third studio album, “Harry’s House,” it was no surprise that 29-year-old Harry Styles received the award for album of the year. The album made its debut on May 20th, 2022 and immediately became a global sensation. Having accumulated over 97.6 million streams on Spotify within its first day, it’s no surprise that Styles’ latest album was deemed the winner.
Record of the year
Following the success of her 2022 hit single, 34-year-old Melissa Viviane Johnson (Lizzo) accepted her fourth Grammy award. The song was released on April 14th, 2022 and instantly blew up on every platform imaginable. TikTok heavily assisted in promoting the song after creators choreographed dances to it and used it in the background of their videos.
Song of the year
73-year-old Bonnie Raitt shocked millions of viewers when she received the award for song of the year. Raitt’s “Just Like That,” which is featured on her latest album, earned her the honorable title. Considering that she was up against artists such as Harry Styles, Adele and Taylor Swift, Raitt’s win was extremely impressive.
Best new artist
Not many artists can say that they received a Grammy at the start of their musical career, but Samara Joy certainly can! The 23-year-old jazz singer won the awards for best new artist and best jazz vocal album, which is quite an accomplishment considering that she didn’t start releasing music until 2021.
This year’s Grammy Awards proved to be a massive success as well as a vital factor in current pop culture discussions.
